Practical Memory: A Simple Guide to Help You Remember More & Forget Less in Your Everyday Life review [Book]  2018-3-13 18:1

Useful small book on improving your memory. I know that most of the techniques and methods offered and explained work, for I found them myself in the course of my life, as my memory was so poor as a youngster and that was so in all our once at a level of writing my doctoral thesis in international law at Geneva University back in 1985, I became acutely aware that I required to drastically improve my memory. So I did a research in the Main Library on mnemonic aids and methods and found quite a number that I started to apply in my everyday life. A lot of of them I found now again in this e book is well-written and the method of presenting the ideas is clear and comprehensive. I have enjoyed reading it. The astonishing thing is perhaps that most of the techniques are based and grounded in everyday life and can be practiced on a easy everyday level, without intellectualizing the matter in any way. Thus, IQ does not play a major role in improving your memory I found! This very fact may create this small tutorial book accessible for a huge readership.

Practical Memory: A Simple Guide to Help You Remember More & Forget Less in Your Everyday Life review [Book]  2018-3-13 18:1

This book is a amazing and direct toolbox of realities and hints, in that order, realities and hints, to improve memory. Of course you do have to use the tools and use them consistently and he shows that to have a amazing memory you genuinely have to exercise it and exercise it well without allow up. The use of these tools to improve memory can and will if used with consistency develop in a person a "muscular memory" that is "sharp as a whip". He shows with clarity and alacrity what can be done with consistent exercise of the easy and creative use of primary reminders also. I suggest this book as a amazing toolbox to genuinely improve memory. I will read it a few more times and closer each time I do. Incidentally: I like the one sentence that sums up the best of memories in this book, "live in the moment". Sure, it seems easy how he uses that sentence, but do not allow that fool or deter you from using the techniques or taking things for granted. You know, taking things for granted I have always deeply felt is a misuse of memory, and this book is a genuinely amazing reminder of that fact for me. So, without any more hyperbole or whatever, I say: Read it yourself.

Practical Memory: A Simple Guide to Help You Remember More & Forget Less in Your Everyday Life review [Book]  2018-3-13 18:1

As I age, I feel as if my memory gets worse and it has concerned me. My mother used to assure me that my challenges with memory was only because I had so much going on, my mind was too busy. After reading this book, I obtain that. Some of the most easy points in the book were the most profound: Slow down, be intentional about remembering. There were a lot of examples I have already been doing: looking back to see where the vehicle was parked in relation to the door, or what path I took from the vehicle to the door of the store. I often repeat names of people I've just met numerous times (out loud and to myself). This book is completely with MANY simple and effective tools to support one improve memory in a lot of locations and I'll be reading it again as I strive to improve even more. Very very Helpful

Practical Memory: A Simple Guide to Help You Remember More & Forget Less in Your Everyday Life review [Book]  2018-3-13 18:1

This author has written several monographs on improving the use of our minds. His emphasis is advice/techniques we can use, rather than theory, thus the title of this perfect book.I love how I.C. Robledo ends his concise, informative Practical Memory: A Easy Guide... with, “Create the Life You Wish to Remember.” This is like the philosophy of existentialists Sartre and Camus, who urged each of us to make a life we can be proud of, be happy with. Robledo’s book has useful hints for remembering that life and using our memory to be more effective within it.He starts with a catalog of general memory disrupters, having himself developed memory issues in graduate school, a most inconvenient time. A doctor alerted him to some primary memory inhibitors: inattention, lack of sleep, nutrition/medication problems, and stress. Each of these has specific steps that can remedy attention is cured with mindfulness, active awareness. To support finding your keys, always place them back in the same spot. If you are not sure you’ll remember that spot, picture it in your mind as you place the keys there. To search them, picture what you were doing when you place them ying to learn something new, give yourself small mplify and organize your working/studying environment to lessen distractions. When traveling, before you leave the hotel or restaurant, place anything you fear you’ll forget, and cannot carry on you, right by your keys, so they all come with search your vehicle in the parking lot, note the aisle letter/number or where the aisle begins or ends. Picture mentally how you entered the zone and intain lists, like shopping lists. You may end up away from your list, yet within reach of the store, so use the first letters of the stuff to form a word or near-word to support you remember: Milk, Bread, prescriptions (Rx), Tape…MBRT could become “My BRaT” or “huMBeRT,” ignoring the lower-case n’t just place a string around your finger: create the memory aid specific: if you need to buy another of something, perhaps leave the empty container where you’ll see it, an “unforgettable cue.”Putting a name to a face has two elements: remembering who the person is and what his name is. When introduced, test to note the association/relationship you have with him or with the introducer and test to search a method to remember him name as r association, think where you met, who was there, why you were there, what happened when you were there…paying attention to these at the time will create remembering easier. You use the journalists’ litany: who, what, when, where, why, and how? After being introduced, use his or her name several times as soon as practical, and then look for things to link it to: persons and places, words that sound similar. “Frank” reminds me of….I remember that a fresh client, Cheryl B., is a retired RN, as is my old friend, Cheryl C.A structure to link your memory to is the alphabet. Trying to remember his name, go through in order: Alan, Andrew,…; Bart, Bert,…; may lose your wallet and cell phone and need an necessary number. Some numbers should be memorized, as I had to do decades ago as a child. When you have your cell phone and some spare time, memorize crucial phone so, write down required information; the Chinese say, “The palest ink outlasts memory.”Robledo notes the Internet serves as a amazing technological repository of memories. I told a client about an intellectual who used comedy and laughter to war his cancer…and succeeded. I couldn’t recall his name, but Google found it for me: Norman e latest portion of this book covers techniques for recalling more of what you’ve seen and done while sight-seeing, useful for others, but not for me, as I almost never is book is a bargain. It will support you appreciate your life more and succeed well beyond your current performance is author writes clearly and interestingly and his books are bargains.

Practical Memory: A Simple Guide to Help You Remember More & Forget Less in Your Everyday Life review [Book]  2018-3-13 18:1

Practical Memory is an perfect book for busy people who aren't looking to do party tricks, but rather are seeking hints and techniques for remembering things that are actually important, like names, phone numbers and where you left your keys. If you wish to memorize Pi out to the 100th degree, look elsewhere. I've implemented a lot of of the common sense techniques suggested by Mr. Robledo with amazing success. The format of the book is such that you can pick and choose the locations that you wish to work on, without having to read each chapter. You can pay more for less useful information, but Practical Memory gives you exactly what it promises.

Practical Memory: A Simple Guide to Help You Remember More & Forget Less in Your Everyday Life review [Book]  2018-3-13 18:1

As the title says, this small book is both practical and simple. Much of what we think we forgot we have, in fact, never really remembered. The author gives useful hints on how to learn a name, a parking spot, the zone of your keys, or whatever you have problem remembering and imprint it in your brain. Often, we think we have a issue with our memory, but the underlying problem is stress, lack of sleep, not good eating habits, or other problems that we need to resolve before we can improve our memory. The book also contains suggestions for recalling past memories and for avoiding getting lost when you is book isn't designed to create you a memory wizard; it's designed to support with practical problems most of us face regularly: losing your keys, forgetting what you went into a room to do, not remembering names. It does just what it was designed to do.

Practical Memory: A Simple Guide to Help You Remember More & Forget Less in Your Everyday Life review [Book]  2018-3-13 18:1

I've read a few books on Memory and a lot of of them I struggled to finish, mainly as the ones I read had more theory than something practical that I could use right is book is quite a contrast, it is coming from the pure practical side and playing down the theory as much as possible, presumably as readers such as myself tend to just place the book down otherwise.I've found it practical for sure and containing a lot of easy and simple to use hints to obtain you going to improving your memory.I have to admit some gets far too basic, but then again the point of the book is to appeal to a wide mass of readers and presumably ideally those who feel they are r its genre, a beautiful amazing read.Disclosure: I was offered a free copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review.

Practical Memory: A Simple Guide to Help You Remember More & Forget Less in Your Everyday Life review [Book]  2018-3-13 18:1

I've been traveling and haven't finished the book, but out of respect to I. C. Robledo, I wish to at least start. I have lost my glasses and have over 5 pair...maybe 8 pair. Well, I was always trying to search them and this has gone on for decades. I would bellow to the heavens and say...help me search the darn things! Now I walk over to where they are supposed to be and 90% of the time I can search exactly the pair that I wish and a backup behind it. You have no idea how amazing this is for me. I only took 3 pair with me on the trip and it was a snap. Reading glasses, sun glasses and unique driving glasses (for double vision). You bet I'll finish the book. I've barely scratched the top. If this works so well, I'm looking forward to other issue solvers.

This book is quite real to its title, offering very easy (though maybe not easy) practical hints to improve daily memory, both short and long term. The author also touches on other factors that can affect memory such as attention, sleep, and nutrition. Simple read with amazing tips.

Miller's first article about bullet journaling on Buzzfeed, "WTF Is A Bullet Journal And Why Should You Begin One? Dot Journaling-A Practical Guide: How to Start and Keep the Planner, To-Do List, and Diary That'll Actually Help You Get Your Life Together review [Book]  2017-10-14 18:9

Since grad school back in the stone age, I've periodically tried to organize my life using quite a few various methods. Nothing ever took until now. Within a couple hours of reading the first page of this book, I had made a journal I've been using consistently ever since (6 weeks now). I can't emphasize enough just how out-of-character this is! I always place it down to laziness and lack of focus, so it's a relief to know that I just required the right method. I really, really want I'd discovered this at an earlier scene of life.I was skeptical about putting work, family, home, diary, planning all in one put and also about the time sink of creating a freeform calendar/diary/planner from a blank notebook, but decided to just test it and begin simple. I left several blank pages for an index. Then made a single page listing each day of the current month with zone for a short note, so I can see major happenings of the month at a glance. On the back of that page I list goals/tasks for the month and also meal ideas for the month (I love to cook from scratch and do a lot of food planning). I laid out each day into a week per page and used the author's recommended symbols to indicate happenings and on I was adding other sections like planning for a trip, fall veggie garden plan, want list etc. It seemed strange to interleave these sections into a everyday schedule and planner, however it works amazing as long as you number the pages and hold an index. I am so much more on top of the small things plus longer term goals and tasks do not fall off the radar. I can create plans so much more quickly and easily than in the notebook has no dots, so it's not as beautiful as the pictures, but that's OK. Spiral binding and size is more necessary to me. The only issue now is that the journal has augmented my prefrontal cortex to the point that I'm terrified of losing it!

I'll work with it as is and when I run of space, I'll assess and thing, given the nature of what I did with my pages, I can see that a notebook with pages with grids or dots would have been less time consuming for me to set up. But I wasn't about to shell out cash when I already have a collection of blank books to which I succumbed for no amazing reason.

The book was really helpful! I've been interested in starting bullet journaling/a dot journal and this was a really helpful intro. It broke down the terminology, but more importantly, it provided several examples of ways you might layout a yearly/monthly/weekly spread and some of the pro/cons of doing it that way. I finally was able to see how I could create it work. Clear, concise writing that was funny and imbedded enough personality to hold it engaging, but not so much that it became distracting.

The concept of bullet journaling is explained well, but realistically all I required were the pics of the various styles and layouts. I feel it's a bit pricey for the length\content. I obtain it; girl's got to eat.

Usually, I begin a book and read it straight through. But I was so entranced but what the author was saying, I found myself looking through my Huge and Necessary collection of blank books to select one because I discovered that the further into the book I went, I was itching to begin making my own journal.I just love the idea of creating my own idiosyncratic diary/journal/planner/appointment book in a method that suits my needs. Although there was one aspect of the book I didn't like and that was at the very end when it seemed like one long advertisement for pens, fiddly buts, etc. If a person wants to obtain all decorative with theirs, more power to them, but I just wish to bring a sense of order and centeredness to my life.I do want I had waited to begin mine instead of just working my method through each chapter. There are some things I would really like at the beginning but are not.

The original creator, Ryder Carroll, has all of his trademarked content (what is found in this book that has been stolen and renamed to create money) posted free at Calling Miller an "early adopter" is laughable; bullet journaling predates her "dot journaling": Carroll made his trademarked bullet journaling way in 2013. Miller's first article about bullet journaling on Buzzfeed, "WTF Is A Bullet Journal And Why Should You Begin One? An Explainer [sic]" was written on May 31, ,2016, and mentions her starting bullet journaling in January of 2016, a full three years after bullet journaling was made and had time to flourish. While yes, Miller acknowledges Carroll in her blog, she does not mention that his methods in their entirety are freely accessible at his website, which she has repackaged them in book form to be sold for $12.95 retail (or whatever price they are being sold for).

I almost purchased this but thought I would double-check the reviews. Glad I did. Hopefully the journal doesn't sell, and she gets what she deserves. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but it can also be stealing something and pretending it is your own, then trying to profit from it. The author deserves...Nothing. :)

This is just a bullet journal. Miller has just repackaged someone else's idea and sold it as her own. You wish a amazing journaling system, check out Ryder Carroll's Bullet Journal System. Best part? You don't need to buy a book to learn how to begin it. Carroll's webpage will explain everything. For free.

In her Intro, Miller says she "gave up" on bullet journaling because she couldn't figure out "the rules" and because the (FREE) info she found on Ryder Carroll's website, didn't match what she was seeing on Pinterest or the wider internet. Not much later in her Into, she goes on to explain "the rules" very well, which would lead some to think she actually understands them more than she's willing to admit. Potential customers should be aware that this is not Miller's original idea. The original idea (and the different iterations) is available for free, simply find "bullet journal" anywhere on the internet.

I received this book before its publication date, which was a lovely surprise, and I immediately sat down to read the entire thing in one sitting. This book is full of simple, effective ideas for creating and, most importantly, sustaining a dot journal, and is absolutely worth the the past few years, I've started -- and stopped -- two dot journals. When I did use them, the system was effective and allowed me to really create it my own. Where my own private blockages came in was when I went on social media to see how others formatted their journals and was inundated with photos of complicated, artistic spreads that created me feel as if my dot journal was ugly. I'm of the minimalist approach, and seeing all of those gloriously decorated and colourful bullet journals created me think I was doing it "wrong," so I stopped. (Silly, I know, but it's what happened, and I know I'm not alone in that.)Then along came Rachel Wilkerson Miller's "Dot Journaling" book. She gives those of us who are intimidated by the artsy dot journalers permission to be our wonderfully minimalistic selves. She provides various types of simple, yet visually appealing, layouts for each section of a dot journal, allowing us to be as creative (or not) as we want. The humor she injects throughout is very engaging and fun to read.I soon bought a Leuchtturm dot journal and some fine-tipped gel pens to start my fresh dot journal journey. With the author's hints and insights, I've been able to thoroughly have fun my third go-around into dot journaling. It's become a central part of my life and goes with me everywhere. I'm very glad I ordered this book!

Great, quick read on dot journaling. I currently do not own a planner and do not dot journal. Honestly, I had no desire to learn about dot journaling when I bought the book. Rather, I wanted to help the author whose blog I've followed for years. It was my method of saying thank you. The book sat on my table for a while after coming in the mail, you know since I really didn't care to learn about dot journaling, until today. As I drank my coffee, I decided to give it a look and quickly got the itch to begin dot journaling. Amazing job, Rachel! You clearly explained the format and inspired me to obtain organized with a dot journal. I think this is a amazing book for anyone looking to obtain organized both professionally and personally. Especially, if you have struggled to merge your worlds into one format.

I bought the Kindle ver of this book to read on my iPad while I was traveling and thinking about starting up a journal again. I am really glad that is the ver I bought because I search myself pulling up the e book when I'm in a shop looking for just the right brush pen brand and color. The value here is a really easy begin up tutorial + a materials reference for brand fresh newbies. I look at it as one of the tools I bought to obtain myself started on a fresh valuable habit. I was brand fresh to the concept of bullet journaling / dot journaling when I read this book, and I really think Rachel W. Miller's style is going to work for me. She describes just a bit of the history of diaries and gets you thinking about how to create your journal part organizational tool and part record of your life/reflection tool. She keeps it super easy and low on the jargon that has formed up around the original concept of Bullet Journaling while fully acknowledging that Ryder Carol's bullet journal is a jumping off point for dot journaling. Having read this book, some of the bullet journaling globe still feels a small impenetrable to me. I'd rather not wrap my head around a "future log spread" but instead just create a couple of pages into a calendar for the year ahead. The layout examples are super easy as well, which keeps them from being intimidating.

This book broke bullet journaling down in a method I could understand and easily execute. It was also a fast and charming read. Highly recommend it.

I read the whole book. No, this is NOT copyright infringement (makes me wonder if those who are saying that even read the book). The author recognizes that the original bullet journal system was made by Ryder Carroll and that he owns the copyright on that system. She also uses his original system as an example of how you might lay out your own journal ... BUT where this books truly becomes valuable is when she takes that original bujo concept and intersects it with what the actual bullet journaling community is doing in the true world. We all see those highly creative, artsy, hand-drawn layouts and wonder how they could ever be part of Ryder Carroll's original intention. But here, the author shows us how those types of layouts can be adapted in multiple ways to honor the original intent of the bullet journal system. For each type of traditional bullet journal section (monthlies, weeklies, dailies, collections, etc.) she gives multiple examples of different ways to set up those pages and why they might work for rsonally, I've adapted her idea for everyday pages where she suggests combining traditional bullet journal task management and tracking with old-school dairy keeping by writing a bit of narrative about your day at the end of each page. I highly recommend this insightful look into how bullet journaling can work for those who don't adhere to the traditional system but also can't deal with the overly-artsy trend event in the bullet journaling community right now.
