    English Language for Cambridge International AS & A Level []  2020-1-19 20:51

There are a lot of things I really like about this book - it's structured clearly, the tone is conversational and current, and the author lays out a clear path for students to be successful on the exam. My one frustration is that there is no glossary of terms. There is quite a bit of vocabulary associated with some of the papers; the author bolds the terms, but we are left to glean the definitions from context or outside research. Overall, though, this is a solid text that is helpful to me and my students. It would also be useful to someone studying independently.

This book was a needed reading for a fully online class at Portland State University (hmm globalization at it's finest?). Fortunately, for that class, I was lucky enough to have the author of the book as my professor. With that being said, this scenario in no method influenced my 100% honest review. The book not only presented a logical flow of information, but also covered a dozens of subjects and is paramount to a successful beginning knowledge of Global Studies. The book provided a dearth of info while not making it too bland and wordy. I fully recommend this book to other Global Studies students as well as academics and general readers alike.

Grandparents as Parents, Second Edition: A Survival Guide for Raising a Second Family []  2020-1-29 19:29

This book was like the mate I always wanted to find, a source of reassurance and warnings with gentle concern. I have mates in the same situation as me, raising a kid whose parents are unable to provide financially or emotionally to the child's needs, but we tended to reinforce each other's fears and discomfort, which are plentiful. As grandparents it seems the only right we have is "the right to remain silent" according to the parents and the lawyers we've sought advise from. This book describes the rewards and pitfalls of raising a grandchild, and gives practical advise for increasing the rewards while avoiding the pitfalls. More important, it anticipates a grandparent's feelings at every step of the long process of raising a child, and describes how to avoid the pitfalls while increasing the iends not trying to raise grandchildren expressed their disagreement with my choice, then disappeared, as the book describes happens to a lot of grandparents. The kids arrive distressed, emotional, sometimes even emaciated, and it is difficult helping them heal knowing at any time a parent may reclaim and hurt them again or dealing with a a loved daughter or son, or their ex spouse, who threaten to take the kid unless the grandparents meet their demands for the help of the child's parents as e authors describe all the risks and difficulties, and also the rewards, of taking in a grandchild or grandchildren. It described to me where I'd erred in the past and where I was erring in the present, and how my plan for a resolution would only create things worse. Ouch. But it also provided reassurance I needed, that my child's issues were not my fault and I could create a difference in my grandchild's life. Most of all, this book created me feel as if there were a lot of on this path, who felt the same feelings I felt, and we not only can create a difference, we are making a difference.Just can't say enough about how helpful this book is to any grandparent trying to raise a child.

It has been, and still is, very simple to feel alone and abnormal with some of my feelings - especially since I don't know any other grandparents raising (and in my case, adopting) grandchildren. Everything I've felt and feel is in this book. Thank goodness I'm not an ogre for having these feelings. I really thought I was heartless, mean, ... things, as a mom, I shouldn't feel towards my own adult child. This book helped me understand it's okay - and normal and I'm allowed - to be angry. Shame is normal. Thank goodness for this book.

My wife and I are amoung the growing amount of grandparents that are raising their grandchildren after having raised their children. We were not expecting to be doing this in our 60's,but what can you do? Grandparents as parents is a comprehensive tutorial on a amazing a lot of problems and various cirtances ex. legal red tape, costs, when a lawyer is needed, support groups and has a lot of various examples of what some grandparents have gone through, its nice to know your not alone. We have even emailed the author, Sylvie de Toledo and the g.a.p. organization and Toledo personally emailed back twice ,and telephoned us to respond questions. This book is essential for grandparents with this on their plate, you will not be disappointed.UPDATE- This is the second addition of this book which has been published since my original review, jut as helpful and releventto what can be a difficult situation at times and very fulfilling on the other.

As You Think: Second Edition []  2020-9-24 22:26

The overburdened shelves of bookstores are so clogged with so-called "inspirational" and "self-help" books these days as to be pathetically laughable. Invariably, they promise fast and simple fixes, while ironically missing the point in their over-complexification of timeless and primary truths. Enter: "As You Think". This tiny, small book, barely 90 pages in length, offers more truth and solution in a single sitting than an entire aisle of pulpy, flavor-of-the-minute, self-help titles. It's notice is really quite simple: We make our reality by our thoughts and feelings, and the more positive those thoughts and feelings are, the closer our experience of and connection to Creation. Truth is never difficult to understand. It's expressed everywhere around you in nature and in every single moment of your experience. All you need do is begin your senses and pay attention. That's why the teachings of all of history's a lot of avatars from Christ to Krishna to Buddha to Mohammed etc. are so simple to understand. Because the truth they speak is always self-evident. The difficulty only remains in whether we choose to accept such a easy proposition. As members of Western Civilization, we love to create things more difficult for ourselves than they really need to be. It's just the kind of thing to hold us busy and distracted from what we should be doing. And that's why I love "As You Think". It is nothing but honest and universal truths simply put, free from the concretized constraints of institutionalized religion, yet still b with spirituality. If you've ever wanted a unbelievable small reminder of what it's all about and how things work, then test "As You Think". Slip it in your back pocket, read it in those moments when you know best, and see for yourself.

I have purchased this book for myself twice already. The info in here is timeless. At first glance it may appear that the 75 pages or so can't really keep that much information. But the truth is that almost every sentence has a lot of value. I feel that as you read each paragraph, or chapter, one needs to understand there is a very powerful notice here. It is not enough to just understand and agree. You must really absorb into your core belief system.I have read it over 10 times, thru the years. I credit this book for giving me the belief and motivation to pursue my bachelors degree in architecture, when I had no cash to do so. ... I studied hard at a JC, and finally after getting accepted to the University, I jumped into my beat up CRX, with less than $500 in my pocket (given to me by a girlfriend), has no financial help available from home, no job waiting for me, and drove 500 miles away to Southern California to begin my education. Oh, and also had this book, heavily highlighted. I graduated, have become an architect, can now support my family, and have had a lot of successes since.

We often forget or overlook the power of our thoughts. This simple, short book brings us back to that serves as a amazing method to refocus your thoughts and helps remind you of just how influential such thoughts can be in terms of how we feel or what our status in life re, the book is, at times, surface-level, but I’m not sure what else you could expect from such a short read. Despite that brevity, it still packs a nice punch and provides amazing value. I recommend checking it out.-Brian SachettaAuthor of “Get Out of Your Head”

It is a amazing book to read when you wish to reflect on your thoughts, actions and your cirtances. Author beautifully manages to engage people to review their thought processes and reevaluate their show conditions. Though the ultimate truth that "You are exactly what all your thoughts sum up to" makes the reader question their thoughts and actions, the ideology fails to identify external factors that influence thoughts. However, the book provides a amazing read.

Reconsidering Logical Positivism: A Comparative Study of EC and US Law (Cambridge Studies in International and Comparative Law Book 8) []  2020-1-17 22:1

Friedman's acc of the logical positivists. The first section was a bit of a whirlwind ride through the school and the debates of the era, and I found it tough going with a lot of assumption of background knowledge which I have largely forgotten. The second section (an examination of Carnap's Aufbau) and the third (on the principle of tolerance, largely centered on Carnap) are clearly written and an perfect explication of Carnap's thought. Highly recommended for students of Austrian ytic philosophy.

Reconsidering Logical Positivism: A Comparative Study of EC and US Law (Cambridge Studies in International and Comparative Law Book 8) []  2020-1-17 22:1

This book is an perfect collection of essays by Michael Friedman (most of the essays have been previously published) on logical positivism. Friedman challenges the so-called "received view" of logical positivism (the focus of the essays are on Carnap, Schlick, and Reichenbach). Friedman demonstrates his rich understanding on the history of 20th century ytic philosophy, the exact sciences, and the positivists. The book also reflects Friedman's bonuses as historian and philosopher. In my view, Friedman presents a persuasive case for viewing the positivists as neo-Kantians (especially, in the "relative a priori" that he argues that they articulate), however, he takes this interpretation a bit too far at some points (NB, a useful sequel to this book is Friedman's "Dynamics of Reason"). Nonetheless, the resulting book represents a valuable contribution to scholarship on logical empiricism and the history of ytic philosophy.

There is a movement of reconsidering logical positivism since the 1990's. Anybody, who is interested in logical positivism, and wants to learn more on it, not just the received view, this book is interesting. But of course more essential for spets, who must know about these fresh theories.A lot of the received view on logical positivism is refuted in this book. All the content is by Friedman, some of it taken from his latest articles.

I don't believe that there is anything else on the shop today that will do for the fresh student of Organic Chemistry what this book does. To take a science so obscure and nuanced and search an easily method to drill the students senses so that they tune into what is necessary on their try problems. The best organic chemistry supplemental book ever. I cannot recommend this book enough. Instructions and explanations given in the book are crystal-clear and super simple to follow. The author did a superb job with guiding readers in a step-by-step manner, starting from the most primary subjects to more and more sophisticated topics. Using just this book and the assigned textbook should be more than enough for students in organic chemistry classes to succeed.

I bought this for my orgo 2 class and even though I don't use it for every lecture, it's amazing for clearing up questions I might have on concepts. The author explains things in a manner that's thorough enough so you won't rely on rote memorization completely, but rather have an understanding of why you do certain things. I've used the first-semester edition for my orgo 1 class and both were amazing for this. The only problem I might have is that the 2nd-semester book doesn't closely follow my class' order of subjects so I'll have to flip around to search what I need, but that's out of the author's control. I was also under the misconception that the type of paper for the pages was copy paper like in workbooks, but it seems like if I write in it I can't completely erase it off without leaving a residue. The book was mailed on time and in amazing condition. Overall, it's worth the buy especially if you need reinforcement besides lectures and don't wish to read the textbook.

This book saved my life when I had to take organic 2 in a four week course. My professor didn’t know the info or how to teach a mechanism, so Dr. Klein was my source for everything because of how accessible and understandable he makes the course. He writes like he is lecturing, and it makes it so much easier to understand! I really suggest reading the whole book, as well as the first semester topics.

Perfect. Book arrived properly protected and packaged securely. The book is clean and crisp and new. David Klein's teaching style is amazing. He cuts out all the overly complicated wording, and simplifies it, all the while keeping all the necessary information. I learn quickly and move through the chapters without the dreaded "ow-my-brain-hurts-I-don't-get-this-I-give-up" brain lag, because he teaches it so well. Definitely a must if you wish to learn chemistry quickly.

Organic Chemistry As a Second Language: Second Semester Topics, 4th Edition []  2019-12-19 18:52

Before I went to medical school, I was a chemist, organic, to be exact. To me, it was always fascinating and not terribly difficult. So I always found it curious that a lot of people had so much problem with organic chem. For the most part, I have to agree that it's usually taught very poorly--sorry about that to most of you teachers/profs out there who take offense. But eventually I realized that the reason I found it simple was that I taught myself the subject, and I did it when I was quite young. Created a difference. A ~big~ ere's nothing intrinsically difficult about organic concepts. What seems to create it difficult--or at least fails to create it clear--is that what's obvious to the teachers isn't said explicitly since it seems to them, well, obvious. Learning the language makes a lot of that "obviousness" intuitive. We learn languages in two ways. Before about age 13 ±, we imprint it: listen to it for a while, feel totally lost, and then one day the scales fall from our eyes (OK: ears) and we're suddenly fluent in it. After that learning window closes, it's drudgery. So naturally when I saw Klein's book, I had to see if he, too, created the leap that I had. He did. He presents it as a language and with any luck, it will revolutionize organic learning, even if it doesn't improve the teaching as much as I'd like. I gave a copy to my stepdaughter. She immediately got eat idea for a book, and quite amazing execution. If you're taking organic chem and you're having a tough time, this may well be your salvation.

Very useful for all the o Chem students out there. The guidelines for various reactions and mechanisms are amazingly clear, the only thing is that the questions are a bit too simple for students that wish to challenge themselves. I would recommend this for having introductions and clearing up some easy concepts that you couldn’t catch.

Seems like it needs improvement. It does not have an updated respond key as some answers in the respond key says various things than the questions. Also questions are harder than the actual exam. The questions are a small too textbook specific and most likely won’t be asked on the AP exam.

Examples & Explanations: International Law, Second Edition []  2020-7-17 21:13

Not the best E&E but probably more so because international law varies so much from professor to professor -- there are too a lot of subjects to cover in a single semester so what you learn will vary. But it gives the objective basics if that's what you need.

I used this in with another hornbook, and they both helped me a lot in clarifying the doctrine. The questions here aren't like other E&Es' questions since international law works differently but they were very helpful in getting me ready for my exam.

How To Make It in the New Music Business: Practical Tips on Building a Loyal Following and Making a Living as a Musician (Second Edition) []  2020-1-17 23:36

Basically, if you're already in the melody business, this book is a really long infomercial for everything the author won't tell you in this book, which supposedly is available via the author's subscription-based "academy." That's the android game today - write a book for road cred, then upsell what you really wish to sell on the back-end. It's just what you do. There are two other bros doing the same exact thing. The amazing news is this is the best of the garding the book itself, yes, it does explain what's going on in the industry today. It begins with some cheerleading and positive reinforcement that all creative types need more than anything. He chats about how labels are dinosaurs and indie is the method to go, and explains royalties and licensing in depth. Definitely useful for anyone just diving in or getting back into the biz. Bro even info every neighborhood in Los Angeles - thought he was a realtor for a moment - and glazes over Nashville and London too. And he talks about how a few already successful (well-funded) bands victory using social media, and offers some decent blueprints for newbs starting out on the huge three platforms. But he also peppers his pages with some tip that might not be too realistic for fresh bands. The author seems to stress something like, when you're ready, it'll happen for you. But that's not how the true globe works. The "Gods of Ready" aren't always watching over deserving bands. The author completely disses 'pay-for-play' two or three times. This tip could be risky for a band using this book as their business bible. There are a ton of con artists in this shop (including several people who sell cheap books with the possible intent of upselling you to their more pricey organizations?), but it's necessary to realize certain pay-for-play situations, specifically where a band sells its own tickets and keeps anything over the minimum, can offer invaluable exposure to fresh fans, sponsors, promoters, producers, and other bands. I've seen it work. Thinking about doing it myself. This is a capitalist world, and everything is for sale, including exposure. Not everyone wants to remain in the basement, and sometimes, especially in smaller markets, there's no other method out.He also states doing college tours and bar-mitzvahs are amazing paying gigs. They may be an option for some, but only if you're already pseudo-famous in that zone (10k + true social media fans), and only if you've got a powerful repertoire of covers. If you're an all-original band with a couple four-track EPs and 472 followers, this is probably not an option for you. I've seen this crash and burn a lot of times. Hated this e necessary thing to realize, and the author does state this, is the melody industry is as dynamic as liquid, and will change before you're done reading this review. Bro has his own small funk project that seems to be mildly successful. Not burning any trails, but it makes him happy. Basically, his hipster Starbucks attitude carries over to his printed words and paints a really rosy picture in a more dingy gray world. That's nice and all, but it won't support most people "Make It."It's a decent book. Solid information. Well researched. There's even a glossary with industry acronyms and terms, and a handy index. It feels nice and looks amazing on a bookshelf, if you still have one of those. And personally, I like the WiFi record player on the label. Old school meets fresh school, I guess. But "How To Create It..." just can't seem to tell me it will provide what it promises - how to create it - unless you take the $1000 upsell and join his thing. I understand every situation is various and there's no surefire method to "make it" in any business. And I understand that you will need some sort of publicist to fine-tune your approach. And maybe the author's side gig is the right thing that will tutorial your melody to fame and fortune. To me, it's the title that's misleading. You probably won't create it with this book alone, but it's a beautiful amazing start.

How To Make It in the New Music Business: Practical Tips on Building a Loyal Following and Making a Living as a Musician (Second Edition) []  2020-1-17 23:36

This book was very timely for me. I am preparing to release my 6th album and Ari's book came at a excellent time. I have created my living in the arts as an actor, songwriter and musician for the past 30+ years. I only want I had had access to this info years ago. There have been a lot of changes in the industry over the past few decades and Ari does a amazing job sorting it all out. The book is well written, laid out in a logical progression and filled with very practical, well researched information. I am taking notes as I go (which I highly recommend). Even though I am old enough to be his dad, I feel like Ari is one of "us" rather than some professorial guru with no real-world experience. This is not a rehash of the typical melody biz advice. Allow me chop to the chase. I like this book so well that I'm going to buy one for my musician son (because if I loan him mine, I'll never obtain it back).

I have been a fan of Ari for his blogs and his presentation at melody conferences. I wanted help him by buying his book. But so far, I am very disappointed because he doesn’t really share detailed steps to do things , he is pitching more of his online courses. I would think for the price I paid for the book And how long the book is, it should contain more than Motivational speeches about how to do things.

Allow me give you some background on where I'm coming from first.I have read the first edition, seen Ari talk at the ASCAP expo earlier this year, attended some of his free online webinars, signed up for both classes (streaming/instagram growth and successful touring) and have been following his mailing list for a year or so now. So, here's the run down of where this book lies in what he brings to the table. If you don't know where to start, but you know you wish a melody career or are at least curious about what it could entail, read this fore reading the first edition, I knew I wanted a melody career but had not a single clue on what that meant beyond the essential "write amazing music". This book gives you that leg up on knowing how to organize yourself to maximize your melody and your potential career. It can't guarantee anything as what is "good" is far too subjective to say. But if you have the "good stuff" then you should be able to create it with enough hard work, planning and your willingness to change with the i asks you right off the bat why you are a musician. It's a amazing question. He also info song/album release plans, marketing, managers, shows, touring, artwork/media, and plenty of other super fine info that will create you at least know where to look IF you wish more detail. The difference between the 1st and 2nd edition is quite simple, it just includes more info on what is now (when the book was finished) the most relevant , in regards to what else Ari has, here's what I think. His free webinars are super helpful if you wish the book restated/maybe elaborated on a bit. His talks at expos etc, are beautiful much the book restated as well with more story/jokes (entertaining and inspiring at the least but not highly informative if you've read the book). Ari's take (his online blog) is going to be where the updated information is as the melody industry changes and maybe some more info than what's in the book. His online classes? While "expensive" to most, are more than just a class by all means. He brings community. Personal groups where he and other students post questions, discussions and progress from taking these courses (and he will answer where he sees the need or wish to). It's all quite inspiring and worth gaining the connections from. Do you need the classes? Of course not. Hell, you don't "need" this book, but it's a nice tutorial for sure!

I've been following Ari Herstand ever since I was watching Tom Morello's Masterclass online and he mentioned to check out Ari's take. So when I heard that Ari was coming out with the 2nd edition of his book I immediately bought it and I'm about half method through the book already! It's a very simple read and VERY helpful in so a lot of ways! He goes over everything from how to write up a BIO, to releasing an album, playing the college scene, touring, getting sponsorship, and how to really thrive in the melody business. I'm a full-time musician and I search the information in this book to be VERY helpful! :)

This book covers so a lot of arenas of the industry, no wonder this second edition is even bigger. Since I read the first edition, I went through this one and post-it-noted the crap out of it for all the pieces I missed on my first go around (plenty, I missed plenty). Sometimes he says "should's" and shares his takes on particular rules he believes in, so you can ignore those if you disagree - I personally appreciate how he adds his perspectives like that, because it helps me shape my own beliefs. If anyone shows negativity towards this book, it's probably because they don't have the perspective yet of what "making it" really means: there are no secrets, it's lots of hard work and chipping away at a huge picture. Ari, and this particular book, is an asset to melody careers that really understand that. Highly recommend.

How to Make It in the New Music Business, Second Edition: Practical Tips on Building a Loyal Following and Making a Living as a Musician []  2020-1-16 6:0

How to Make It in the New Music Business, Second Edition: Practical Tips on Building a Loyal Following and Making a Living as a Musician []  2020-1-16 6:0

I've been a professional musician since 1986 and have a shelf full of self-help books pertaining to the arts and how to survive within the field. It's a constantly evolving industry and there's not one hard quick rule to making a i has distilled all the principles one would need to obtain a amazing head begin within the creative industry. The book is geared towards musicians, but the principles apply globally towards how to use social media.I'm not even finished with it, but the knowledge presented is so spot-on I have no issue recommending it highly at the halfway mark.I will be gifting this book to several people this holiday season.

THE MUSICIAN'S ESSENTIAL BOOK!!! Omg , I was screaming. I'm a known composer, Ghost writer, with a lot of Nda's so I can't say who I wrote too, but I have to say if you need a book to become a musician professionally it is this one. This book is extremely honest to the point that it hurts, but that's the melody in a nutshell, every single method to create cash is detailed here. you can also obtain a audio book for a simple read but I suggest physical because if not you will miss necessary URL's , tips and trust me this man has teached me so much fresh things I have to search out who he is. Nevertheless, buy it if you are a musician.

How To Make It in the New Music Business: Practical Tips on Building a Loyal Following and Making a Living as a Musician (Second Edition) []  2020-1-17 23:36
