Cane Topper Woodcarving: Projects, Patterns, and Essential Techniques for Custom Canes and Walking Sticks (Fox Chapel Publishing) Step-by-Step Instructions and Expert Advice from Lora S. Irish []  2020-7-2 20:16

This book has beautifully drawn patterns and designs, but from a beginners perspective I could have used a book with more instruction as far as technique goes. If you are a beginner, this book may not be as instructive as you would hope. It seems to be more of a book of ideas for those who already have the primary face carving skills established. But hopefully I'll be able to rise to the task in the future.

Finally a carving book with actual instructions and here 45 mins ago already learned more than the three previous carving books I've read. Talks about wood types, how to prep, hey you know those cool cane toppers? Created out of basswood and then added and this book contains instruction and tips. Learned a ton and I'm only on page 27! Thx Lora! Amazing read

This book helped create me and my sons first carving experience fun. It's created carving easy to understand, and explains the fundamentals. Even though this is an entry level book, I have been able to apply the principals taught over a huge range of wood working projects.

Ironically I bought the book because I was interested in carving the tiki figures depicted in the photos. Guess what? There is no mention of them and the only tiki figure in the book is totally various than the seven portrayed. I feel it is idiotic to showcase something that is not part of the instruction of the book.

I do a lot of forms of art work with wood or stone and am always on the lookout for fresh ideas that I can use or mix into some of my art work. I have never had an art lesson of any kind, but I am proud to say that Dremel tool company created me artist of the month for one of my wood carvings. This book is for, maybe, some fresh ideas.

I bought this book as a show for a family member but enjoyed reading it myself. It is a amazing primary tutorial to carving walking cane tops, tells the process and the steps to produce cute, well proportioned small is could also be used for the person who wants to learn to carve nordic or celtic icons as it shows designs which could easily be modified to become those classic carvings.

Chris Pye's Woodcarving Course & Reference Manual: A Beginner's Guide to Traditional Techniques (Fox Chapel Publishing) Relief Carving and In-the-Round Step-by-Step (Woodcarving Illustrated Books) []  2020-1-27 0:37

Chris Pye is one of the best-known teachers of modern woodcarving and in this book he shows you how -- more-or-less.Woodcarving in the classic manner is scary looking from the outside. In addition to the enormous number of tools, there is the matter of learning the a lot of techniques. Pye doesn't so much de-mythologize all this as lead you through it by the hand.Take the tools, for example. Pye illustrates and explains a couple of hundred of the more common ones, but he also points out that the beginner doesn't need more than 6 or 8 primary tools and most woodcarvers will never touch most of that vast array in their careers. With the tools described, Pye moves to the heart of woodcarving, sharpening and preparing the tools for use. A serious carver will spend at least as much time sharpening and honing as she does using the tools. Properly sharpened tools create all the difference in the globe and Pye devotes considerable zone to showing you how it's done.Unfortunately sharpening is something that has to be learned by practice and most beginners end up working with improperly sharpened tools because they haven't mastered the art. This makes everything harder an seriously limits what you can do. BTW: woodcarving tools come with an edge on them, but they are not properly sharpened. Each tool has to be sharpened and honed before it can be used to do anything but cheat and tear at e is English and this shows in the selection of woods he discusses. Some of them are not common in the en we obtain to the carving projects. Since Pye is a carver in the classical tradition the projects concentrate on relief and three-dimensional projects. They are definitely interesting -- I particularly liked the banana peel -- but they are probably a small much for l in all, a very amazing book to obtain you started.

I consider myself an intermediate wood carver that wants to expand his skills into larger more interpretive pieces. I have found that Chris Pye has developed an entire line of books that take the beginning carver through the info required to understand the mechanics of the tools, the complexity of the medium and development of the design to be a successful carver. This review is on one of the books I have purchased recently. I now own seven of Chris' books and have just about read them cover to cover. He has helped greatly in grounding my knowledge in time tested techniques and similar it to historical pieces for both amazing examples and bad. If there is any fault to be found it is that Chris' style is that of a European carver and thus relies on chisels for most of his carving as compared to the American style that uses both knives and chisels to work the design. Book is very through and refers to sections in the other books that he has written for more detailed descriptions of branch locations of instruction.

This book is packed amazing information, pictures that do a amazing job of illustrating the subject at hand and examples of beautiful, inspiring only complaint is that certain parts are a small too brief. I feel that the section on sharpening withholds too much information... and then encourages you to consult (i.e., buy) the author’s book on the subject to search out more. Instead, I would recommend checking out YouTube and his site. Although, when it comes to sharpening, I highly recommend Famous Woodworking’s The Excellent Edge. Carving tools are only one section in that book but there is so much amazing info that workworkers should know about.

I liked this book, but learning by book is slower because you have to test to imagine what he's doing based on the words and pictures. I learned some things from this book, but later I discovered Chris Pye had a subscription-based www service called "Woodcarving Work." It has hundreds of videos, which blows this book away in its depth and clarity. If I could do it all over again, I'd save my cash and just watch the videos on his website.

Like a lot of masters, the dude needs to obtain over himself a bit and acknowledge his method isn't the only way, but if you can filter out that part of the writing and approach this as one of a lot of approaches, and from one of the world's best in the west, it's got really solid content at a amazing price.

The author writes in a very odd style. The instructions in the book are difficult to understand. It's almost as if the author is trying to write in a poetical style concerning wood working while also explaining the art of carving wood. The author, unfortunately, doesn't pull it off. Test to search a book that is down-to-earth, simple, to the point, and well-illustrated. I'm still dazed after reading this book.

Well written book by an expert carver. However, I am an old guy and my eyesight isn’t what it used to be. When I pick up this book I have evil thoughts about a publisher that uses such a little font, leaving so much white space, either in the margined or between the lines. A little increase in the size and boldness of the font would create the book much more enjoyable to read. The illustrations are excellent. The book layout is very beautiful, but very difficult for old eyes to read.

As a beginning woodcarver I like this magazine as the instructions are straight-forward and the pictures are nice and crisp and give you step-by-step instructions on what to do. While my creations are not up to snuff on some of the more advanced things, I’m getting there courtesy of this magazine. I also appreciate the safety hints as well as the reviews of different knives and other tools. If you are interested in starting out with woodcarving, I would recommend this magazine.

The photography and instruction is amazing but the vast majority of the projects are caricature figurines and corny knick knacks straight out of the 60s/70s. I was really hoping this magazine would showcase better work – think of modern woodcarving by artists like Chris Pye or attractive traditional carving in the Thai style. There have been a few interesting things in this magazine but definitely not enough to subscribe for. This was mostly amazing for a laugh.

This book gave me a lot of ideas to test out for myself.I bought a little vise, screwed it to a piece of 3/4 inch thick hardwood, so I can move it easily if need be.I use two little C-clamps to keep the wood (with the vise screwed into it) onto my table, then put an 18 inch powerful wood clamp into the vise to keep the wood I intend to carve.I have a 4'x8' piece of plywood on top of my 4'x8' table that I allow extend out from my table about an is allows me to clamp the wood with the vise screwed to it with C-clamps onto the extending part of the is plywood top is also screwed to my is table is something that I already had in my is works out amazing for me, but without this book I may have never thought of doing it.What I did just seemed easier to me than cutting all the wood and things he did in order to achieve the same result.

They have step-by-step instuctions and pictures which would certainly be a help. I think wildcatters would like it and I would recommend it for them.

This is a amazing book, however, all the poses are in Sanskrit instead of the English ver of the pose. So, when you're looking something up, you can never search it. I think he required to realize MOST instructors don't know all the Sanskrit names. Regardless, it does force you to learn theSanskrit name because you have to hold looking them up in other sources (not his book) to search out what the hec he's talking about.

Amazing for anyone wanting to better understand the mechanics of teaching yoga. This book starts with the history of yoga before moving into the teaching sections. Info is included on setting up your practice area, techniques, sequencing, and working with unique groups. For me, the best part was in the section on teaching asanas where it looked at various poses and went into what to look for and emphasize for each one. Although I do not consider myself a teacher, I do occasionally lead group practices and this book helped me create the transition from practice to leading.

Pure Vanilla is truly a cookbook most will wish in their collection. I have this fine book on my shelf. It has a lot of offerings to tempt the cook into trying so a lot of various recipes just for the joy of cooking. It even tells the difference between the a lot of kinds of vanilla available on the shop from the standard ones on the shelf your mother used, to use to the more pricey e pictures are wonderful. I don't know a lot of who wouldn't wish this book for themselves or as a bonus to their favorite cooking companion. Nothing beats the amazing meal that is created from scratch in my opinion. I'm sure it won't disappoint in any way. It's worth the money...truly.

Tag Stephens' "Teaching Yoga" is a must-have book for all yoga teachers and practitioners. The book is well written and organized. It is simple to read (compared with some yoga classics) and is very informative. It is not only a amazing reference for a lot of common poses (asanas) , it also covers a lot of aspects that advanced students and teachers are interested in: history of yoga, pranayama, bandhas, sequencing, meone mentioned that Tag uses too a lot of Sanskrit in his book. I must say I disagree! I actually appreciate Tag using Sanskrit name for the asanas as I already know the English names. I wish to learn the Sanskrit names as well! As yoga originates from India, it is logical to use Sanskrit st but not least, Tag is a very detail-oriented and insightful teacher. I found myself re-reading sections of his book and picked up insights that would let me to become a better, safer practitioner and teacher. I also found the Appendices (the list of asanas and the asana elements) extremely useful for planning a yoga class. I highly recommend this book to anyone who does yoga.

I'm a vanilla fan obviously. I was disappointed at how a lot of recipes used white chocolate. I love reading cookbooks and beyond the intro I didn't search the accompanying stories very interesting (examples: the authors husband thinks creamer in coffee is girly and the author likes popcorn popped in oil vs air popped). Sources listed for specialty vanilla should have been interesting but so a lot of were out of stock so I will have a hard time trying the more special recipes. There were a lot of typical vanilla recipes that just called for 2-3 times the average recipe.

The recipes are excellent, my favourite being the cupcakes. All your questions are answered eg is it worth it growing your own etc. I bought on at less its original. Its was on sale.

I read Teaching Yoga during my yoga teacher training. I would recommend this book to everyone whether you are planning on teaching or not. . It is a amazing resource for current and future yoga teachers. It explains the risks of poses, how to tutorial students in and out of poses and what to look for and emphasize. I believe it will support those that wish to teach to be better teachers. I also believe it will support those that do not wish to teach to obtain the most out of the yoga classes they take. It will give you a better understating of the history and philosophy of yoga. You will gain a better of understanding of what you should expect out of your yoga instructor.

This book has been super helpful as I started teaching more and more yoga classes. I actually felt that there was more info in this book than I received in my teacher training course and it was recommended to me by another yoga teacher who had to read it as needed reading in her course. The anatomy was useful and I really like the method the whole book was written. It was simple to search info and skip around in and I also think Tag Stephens did a amazing job of addressing a lot of issues, and writing in a clear and concise manner!

As a current student working towards my 200hr teaching certificate, Teaching Yoga has been especially necessary to my practice. Granted, this book does have some serious bias towards certain brands of yoga (bikram, specifically), I really did have fun this book. The textbook style set it apart from a lot of of the other yoga-related reading materials that I’ve read. This book offered insight into multiple styles of yoga, primary breathing techniques, sequencing, history of yoga, and more. All around an excellent, informative book- amazing for teachers and students of any level.

Who would have thought that a book about Vanilla would be a page turner? Well, this one is. Once you begin reading, it is hard to place down. The book is well written, well illustrated and loaded with interesting info about Vanilla and its uses. After an introduction to Vanilla you will search amazing recipes, from breakfast foods to drinks. The author also provides an perfect resource tutorial to where you can buy Vanilla beans, extract, paste, powder and more. Buy the book, you will not be dissapointed.
