Facility Piping Systems Handbook: For Industrial, Commercial, and Healthcare Facilities []  2020-1-7 18:51

I wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, it has a very huge amount of errors. I started jotting them down around chapter 5. After finishing the book I have 8 (4.5"x7") pages of these error notes. I did not go out of my method to search these; they were just the most blatant as I read through. I am sure you would search more if you did a rigorous review. It feels like the editor was asleep at the wheel. Here are some highlights (lowlights?):1.) Book jacket says it covers steam systems. The chapter on steam was removed after the 2nd edition. The editor/publisher doesn't even know or care what is inside this book.2.) Numerous typos and formatting problems.3.) Troops are often missing or wrong4.) A lot of in text references to tables and figures are wrong or the figure is missing.5.) Book calls 90 degree bends ¾ bends (p. 2.26). I really hope this was a not good editing job and not what the author really thinks.6.) Many, a lot of equations are wrong. Imagine a computer program that randomly assigns mathematical operators and you wouldn't be far off. My favorite was Pressure=Force + Zone (p. 15.9).7.) There is a lot of incorrect table data. For example, value of btu/gal of propane is off by a factor of 10 in Table 13.2.8.) Description of the pressure vacuum breaker (p. 9.51&2) gets 2/3 of the salient features wrong. The relevant figure shown is not even a PVB.I think people who gave this book a higher review just use it for occasional reference and haven't read it all the method through. I would be very cautious about using any info from this a side note, this book was originally $150. I bought it used for half that, and it is currently $30 new. That is telling.

Facility Piping Systems Handbook: For Industrial, Commercial, and Healthcare Facilities []  2020-1-7 18:51

Facility Piping Systems Handbook for Industrial,Commercial and Health Care Applications by FrankelMcGraw Hill Publishers 2010Reviewed by: Dr. Joseph S. MarescaThe work begins with an exhaustive list of professional institutesrelated to the subject of piping systems and processes. Examplesof the governing institutes are:o American Gas Instituteo American Petroleum Instituteo American Society of Testing / Materials and a host of othersThere are codes for piping systems, allowable materials, stresses, seismic loads, thermal heat expansion, fabrication, installations and e subject of corrosion is discussed extensively. Corrosionresistance is the ability of the pipe to resist internalcorrosive effects of fluid flow throughout , as well as externalcorrosive flows on the pipe itself .i.e. soils and the surrounding atmospheric conditionsCorrosion can be reduced or eliminated with suitable coatings, linings and cathodic protection .Cathodic protection has become a widely used way forcontrolling the corrosion deterioration of metallic structuresin contact with most forms of electrolytically conductingenvironments. Cathodic protection reduces the corrosionrate of a metallic structure by reducing its corrosion potential, bringing the metal closer to an immune neral corrosion describes pipe dissolution over the entireexposed surface where localized corrosion resides in a smallarea of the pipe. Corrosive cracking is thephysical deterioration and cracking of pipe wall due toincreased operating temperature, tensile stress on the pipeand chemicals. The author describes water impurities like turbidity(insolubles) , bacteria and viruses.Tensile stress occurs when a material undergoes a pulling orstretching force. Stress is defined as a force appliedover a cross-sectional zone in typical troops of pounds per square inch(psi) or Newtons per square e type of stress that a material is exposed to will depend on howthe force is being applied. The three primary types of stress aretensile, compressive, and e maximum tensile stress that a material can withstand beforefailure is known as tensile strength .The value of ultimate tensile strength varies widely fordifferent materials. Soft, malleable materials likemany plastics, rubber, and metals are considered elastic andwill undergo significant deformation beforea complete failure occurs. Hard and brittle materials, like concrete and glass, have small or no deformation beforecomplete failure. The ultimate tensile strength for manydifferent types of concrete, plastics, metal, wood, glass, rubber and ceramics is fairly described in manuals;such as this uble wall piping involves the installation of outer pipearound an inner pipe which prevents the release of hazardousliquids being transported in the inner pipe.Typical valve design considerations are temperature, pressure, shutoff valve operation, pressure drops, corrosive resistance, velocity, fire safety and hazardous nerally, no machine should be designed without the ability toshut it down by some means either electrical, mechanicalor otherwise. In addition, some applications areconstructed with redundant and tridundant capabilities toaddress contingency ere is an extensive section on insulation which includesfiberglass, cellular glass, expanded plastic foam, foamed plastic, calcium silicate, mineral fiber andinsulating cement.Overall, the volume enunciates a fairly complete renditionof applicable fluid principles and materials sciencestructure of matter intertwined with the relevantstandards setting authorities who promulgate standardsfor the engineering and allied professions . This acquisitionwould be excellent for the engineering professional in yourhousehold. Students of engineering fluid mechanicswill search this volume useful for exams and projects.

This is really an outstanding book (and I read it from cover to cover after it arrived from Amazon); Frank Kerry has assembled a collection of info on a topic that is essential to the functioning of so a lot of components of modern society.I congratulate Frank for his perfect work and for taking the time to doent it so thoroughly and with such a natural balance of hard earned knowledge, essential theory and history. If you need or perhaps just want, to understand the processes around the separation, storage and transport of gases (particularly the atmospherics) then this is the book for you. I bought the book for a particular reason and found (along with the info I sought) an absolute wealth of insights that led to other similar is my belief that books of this nature, concerning vital, fundamental techniques are as necessary to our survival and growth as a species, as are the efforts to conserve and improve biodiversity.Highly recommended!!!

The diamond growth / reactor chapters by Butler and Bachmann justify the purchase alone. Of course, if you are serious in diamond you already have it right?Highly cited and justifiably so.

Although there are a few books available on cryogenics, there is nothing like Frank Kerry's "Industrial Gas handbook" for both completeness and depth of coverage of beautiful much everything similar to ASU (oxygen -- nitrogen -- argon) plants and the Industrial Gas business. Engineers and really anyone interested in industrial gas -- ASU plants will appreciate the efforts Frank Kerry created to assemble all of this useful and complete info in the Handbook.

Practical Electrical Wiring: Residential, Farm, Commercial, and Industrial []  2019-12-23 20:37

If you don't feel sure about your electricity projects, if you are uncertain about rules, codes and regulations involved, you must read this book. It is also very simple to follow its explanations. You don't even need any deep knowledge of electric circuits or machinery to place into use all the safe practices described herein. You won't regret this purchase if the electricity projects in your country must follow the prescriptions of the American National Electrical Code.

This is the same book that my Dad gave me 37 years ago when I got into the electrical trades. Well, that book was given away a long time ago to someone else entering the trade. We have an apprentice that wanted to begin his "book learning" so this was the first book that we thought of for him. It is still has all of the pertinent info in it, easily understood, without going off the technical deep-end. I'd recommend it to anyone entering the electrical trades as a amazing starting point.

I am an apprentice electrician who has done a bit of everything. I have a grand desire to LEARN and this book has continually satiated that desire. I have been reading it in conjunction with an illustrated tutorial to the NEC and can't imagine how anyone could place the practical in written form any better. I strongly suggest this book for anyone who desires to not only be an electrician, but one with a mind towards doing your job safely. Not simply for self-preservation, but for the safety of client and bystander as well. I must confess that I am not finished with the book, but am gleaning loads of unbelievable guidance. EXCELLENT!

In an earlier ver of this volume I studied it for an entire summer and passed the Master Electrician Exam the first time. That was decades ago.Anyone interested in the trade would be wise to begin here. When I teach in this zone I go beyond the book and focus on the mathematics and also use the volume Electrical Power System Basics--likewise available from something people should attend to is there are conflicts between the National Electrical Code and the Code used my the power utility. These have severe consequences for safety. But that is another discussion. But for starters you may wish to study the paper "Dangers of Stray Voltage and Stray Currents" by Donal W. Zipse, P.E.

I've read a couple of Mr. Holmes' other books, and this is another amazing addition to his works. It's got very primary information, as well as very detailed info on all aspects of solar, specifically targeting off-grid applications. What I really like about this book is that there are a lot of locations where he points out the 'gotchas' in researching and implementing a solar system, such as how temperature affects the system. Don't obtain me wrong, there are more detailed tutorials out there, but a lot of of those are so detailed, that I have gotten frustrated with the lack of more primary information, or the method the info was presented. This is presented in a very down to earth way, that makes it simple to understand. If implementing an off-grid system, I would recommend reading this book from cover-to-cover first, taking notes along the way, and then using it as a reference tutorial during the research, planning, and implementation process.

If you are looking at any form of off-grid solar, this book is almost a must read. It lucidly explains all the details, starting with a primary introduction to electricity, enough to really comprehend all you need regarding your solar e only locations where I think you might wish to expand beyond what the book offers is to be very sure that solar thermal is not an option you should be considering, in the right locations it is very strong for 95% efficiency wins out over 22% efficiency any day. In some cases, you might wish both. The other zone is batteries. I am not wild about Lithium Ion for stationary applications, and the book does not discuss other battery technolgoies in depth, but there are tubular gel batteries, NiFe batteries, coming soon Seasalt batters, and a number of other options which actually method outperform LiIon. Some have life expectancies double or triple that of Lithium so, I think the book should contain some more info on the sustainability/recyclability issue, which is becoming bigger by the day. One example is CdTe thin movie technology is so potentially toxic, you might search yourself stuck with a large recycling issue when all is said and done.Having said that, in all of the primary considerations for planning off-grid solar this book is an absolutely solid put to begin to the point that even if newer options come along the knowledge from this book will support you evaluate them much more easily.

Full Disclosure: I was given a free copy of this eBook to be an early reader. I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed other solar books authored fully or in part by Holmes. The book starts with the basics of electricity and builds to a complete explanation of all parts of a solar hematic drawings and images are also included. There's plenty of detail for any type of setup and size. Though the reading can be a bit slow at times, I don't think that's a fault of the book but a function of the task.Every step is outlined and explained. If you're comfortable with a subject, just skip it. If you're not setting up panels on a boat, skip that chapter. The amazing news is, whatever your level, whatever your project this covers it with no nonsense. I've read a lot of how-to solar books and this is a amazing one. The detail is exceptional and the photos and schematics a large help. I learn something new, and about free online resources (for system sizing, etc) every time I read one. For any project, I like to consult multiple sources and I recommend you do the same. I wouldn't go with a single book for any task, but this one is a amazing one to contain in your solar library. Larry Nocellaauthor, Four Weird Tales of Horror, available on Amazon

Five stars was easy, given that this particular book goes through every single step in detail. And the best part of it is that it does it in a method that's simple for myself to son is an aspiring electrician who's just finishing up trade school and has started an apprenticeship. I allow him review parts of this book as I was reading it and bounced some ideas off of him, and the best part is, he was absolutely thrilled that the book included so much technical knowledge and in a method again that was simple for myself to understand, and yet he looked at and immediately knew what was being talked about.I can firmly recommend this book to everybody who is looking to install a solar setup for their little house for their cabin or even full size house and or RV!I can firmly recommend this book to everybody who is looking to install a solar setup for their little house for their cabin or even for their home it'll work for everything it's amazing.

The book doesn't exactly break fresh ground, but it seems reasonably up-to-date with the level of technology involved. At least, as much as anything can be when the globe is changing so rapidly. Although it purports to be primarily about mobile uses for solar power, it spends a lot of time talking about fixed solar power systems as well. The majority of the images and illustrations have been credited to different companies and web sites; there don't seem to be a lot of original images or diagrams made specifically for this book, but I guess there's no point in reinventing that particular wheel. I'm an electrical engineer, and have worked some personally with solar power systems in a bus we converted to an RV, with solar panels on the roof, and I didn't see anything glaring in terms of errors in the electrical discussions. Overall, I'd say this would be a amazing resource for someone starting out, who has no, or limited, experience with solar power generation and storage, but I don't really see any amazing value in it if you already own related books or have worked more extensively with solar power.(I don't see a check box for it, so I'll place it here. I was given a free, PDF copy of this book and asked to give an unbiased review, which I have attempted to do.)

It lucidly explains all the details, starting with a primary introduction to electricity, enough to really comprehend all you need regarding your solar e only locations where I think you might wish to expand beyond what the book offers is to be very sure that solar thermal is not an option you should be considering. In the right locations it is very strong for 95% efficiency wins out over 22% efficiency any day. In some cases, you might wish both. The other zone is batteries. I am not wild about Lithium Ion for stationary applications, and the book does not discuss other battery technolgies in depth, but there are tubular gel batteries, NiFe batteries, coming soon Seasalt batters, and a number of other options which actually method outperform LiIon. Some have life expectancies double or triple that of Lithium so, I think the book should contain some more info on the sustainability/recyclability issue, which is becoming bigger by the day. One example is CdTe thin movie technology. CdTe is so potentially toxic, you might search yourself stuck with a large recycling issue when all is said and done.Having said that, in all of the primary considerations for planning off-grid solar this book is an absolutely solid put to begin to the point that even if newer options come along the knowledge from this book will support you evaluate them much more easily.

Disclaimer: I received a pre-publication advance copy of this book for review. The final book may have some is book stars by discussing terms required for a primary understanding of the basics of electricity; such as. AC vs. DC power, volts, amps and watts. I'm not sure anyone who needs that primary level of knowledge should be jumping into building a system that produces potentially deadly levels of electricity. The book is very detailed in all aspects of building your own solar-powered electrical system that is NOT CONNECTED to the electric grid. I would like to have seen a straight up statement that extra info is needed for a grid-connected system, particularly anti-islanding equipment. The book also is totally silent on local building codes and electrical codes. I search that a serious omission if someone is considering building a standalone solar home.Other than that, the book is a unbelievable introduction to standalone solar installations. While complicated, it simplifies the concepts and process by breaking it down to steps, equipment and more. The calculation charts are ere are some problems with the Kindle ver of the book where some picture captions don't line up with the images. In one case, Section 4.1, the captions are actually reversed from the *.pdf version. (I downloaded both to be able to compare.) Also in Section 2.2 the authors said they would explain where the band, AC/DC got its name, but I didn't search that. (I'm being facetious; that is truly not a huge deal.)

I have finished reading Mobile Solar Power book and I am of the opinion that it is full of very useful information. It will familiarize the reader with the nuts and bolts of solar technology and also the theory and app of this technology. The book will be a amazing reference work for a novice or professional solar system installer.I was impressed that the authors included tools and parts (connectors, pliers, lugs etc.) of the installers trade with their proper names. This info is usually assumed to be known by a reader but left out of a book. From theory to useful info this is a well written and laid out GUYP.S. I saw a couple of insignificant proofreading/editing errors but otherwise It is a well done book.

Wow. I loved this book. Simple to read and understand and it covers all aspects of deciding on a solar power installation, how to design and plan an appropriate installation, how to search the right components and tools for the installation, where to obtain professional support if you need it and much much more. I spent a bit of time researching solar power for my dream of living in an RV full time and it was very confusing. This book explains everything and is an invaluable tool. Even if you are going to hire pros to do an installation for you this book is a must to understand the process so that you are sure you are choosing the right pro and they are doing right by you. You will know what direction you want to head, why what you wish may or may not work out and you can decide on the level of quality and cost you can afford. The explanation of primary electrical terms is perfect also. Just a amazing reference.

In looking for more info around Solar Power and the flexibility it offers, Mobile Solar Power provided amazing instruction. This book offers everything from a beginner level introduction, to how to crimp a cable, and ends at troubleshooting and maintenance. While most engineers have a difficult time staying out of the techno-babble, the authors have been able to take a complex topic and support tutorial the reader learn about solar power. The book takes them to the point of full installation after they have planned, sized, and designed their system in a very easy manner with amazing of the main things I enjoyed about this book, was that the authors did not tell you what to purchase, size, or install. Instead they showed the reader how to determine and size what they need for the app they were wanting. This applied to off-grid, on-grid, RVs, houses, and even boats. The info in these pages apply to any type of design imaginable at a very simple to understand level.I am very happy to add this book to my reference library and will be used frequently for my various needs and applications.
