This is the first thorough presentation of this work. It is well organized and and has content listings at the beginnings of sections, very helpful. The translation is a bit boring, probably due to the translator not feeling to transmit the feeling of original.

I was so satisfied to see this translation. I teach globe literature, and the earlier translation is practically unreadable. My students loved this version, especially because the parables are in prose, which lends to the readability. Certainly we talk about the format of the original format of the couplets, but in this translation, the students are able to connect with the content and the themes in a more practical way, especially for an undergraduate survey course. And just from the standpoint of a general interest reader, this translation has finally created Attar accessible, relevant, and enjoyable. It's a amazing book, and I highly recommend it.

The Conference of the Birds []  2020-1-22 19:8

If you love the wisdom, poetry, and beauty of Gibran, Hafiz, and Rumi, you will be delighted to read The Conference of the Birds by Attar (1145-1220 C.E.). Considered by Rumi to be the “master” of Sufi mystic poetry, Attar is best known for this epic poem. Rumi revered Attar so much that he said of him, “Attar traveled through all seven cities of love, while I am only at the bend of the first alley.” This alone was enough to entice me to learn is translation by Sholeh Wolpe evokes the beauty and lyricism of Attar using the mode of storytelling via poetry. Indeed Hafiz and Rumi later adopted this same technique. Wolpe captures, for all to understand, Attar’s magnificent allegorical tale about the human struggle for meaning, both physical and spiritual. In Sufi tradition, Attar elucidates life’s mysteries not often appreciated by preaching at people. Rather he tells us ancient Sufi stories and anecdotes that lead us to the truth.Wolpe has captured the intense beauty of the original Persian masterpiece and has transformed it into contemporary English poetic prose. She is an award-winning poet in her own right and her prose is not wanting. It is filled with exquisite sketches, stunning pictorial descriptions, and subterranean emotions. She has captured Attar’s wisdom through allegorical photos and oodles of treasured stories, all told by the plush birds of the Earth. There is much to contemplate, love and have fun in this work. Read it with an begin heart and pearls of wisdom will flow into your lap and leave you serene and peaceful.

Genius. This translation of Attars classic book, "The Conference of the Birds," by Sholeh Wolpé is beautiful. The photos and meditations are heart wrenching and poignant. Thank you, Sholeh Wolpé for translating a ver of Attar's classic work that is as smart as it is beautiful, and that flows from the page as if it were written solely for the English reader. This book, as amazing as it is, leaves me in a state of awe, wondering how gorgeous the ver written in Farsi must be, yet overwhelmingly content with the ver that I have just read. Thank you for taking on this project and making it one of the best translations I've ever read. And thank you for shining a spotlight on the Iranian literary tradition, something that is especially necessary right now.

This book blew me away. I had to read it for an English Lit class I took in university and I ended up keeping it in my private library to read for my spiritual development. My interpretation of this story is that the birds of all kinds (representing people of the world) all have to go on this journey (a metaphor for life) that will be difficult and if they create it through they will become one with the Simorg (not sure what that is but I took it to mean that they will be transferred to a better place; a higher level of spirituality and intellect). The hoopoe bird is very wise and gives the other birds words of leadership and wisdon. If you are a spiritual person, I would recommend this book.

Farid ud-Din Attar, also known as Attar of Nishapur, a Persian poet, was born in Nishapur, Iran in 1145. In his early career as a pharmacist, he helped a lot of people in his home town. Later he abandoned his pharmacy and traveling to various countries became his intense interest. After meeting some Sufi leaders in India, he started promoting Sufi ideas as he returned to Nishapur. Attar's master piece, "The Conference of the Birds", is a poetic moral story of a flock of birds in the journey of seeking truth, the God. With aimless life style, birds around the globe gather in a garden test to search out if there is a meaning in life and if there is a God. An smart bird, called hoopoe, led these birds and started their long journey of searching for truth, the meaning of existence. By using riddles and answers, hoopoe advised and encouraged all birds to be brave, grateful and to be truthful. Life is not an simple android game and we all live to be reborn and we are born to learn how to live a fulfilling anslated by Afkham Darbandi(Davis's wife) and Dr. @#$% Davis, this exceptional book catches man's heart for almost one thousand years. If you like Rumi and Hafez, you will have fun this book much more profoundly. As a poem, it is exquisite and spectacular; as an epic allegory of seeking God, it is majestic and noble; as a spiritual guidance, this book leads you to your intellectual self. I read this book a lot of years ago and at that time I was mainly focusing on the spiritual part of the book. After becoming a serious birder, revisit of this book brought me to a higher level of realization. I consider myself a quick reader. However, this is not a book you will wish to read without a thought or a lot of thoughts. You need to read this book like tasting a amazing wine and, you will swallow its essence only when you understand life should be embraced with love not hate, with peace not war.Happy birding and satisfied reading!

The Conference of the Birds (Penguin Classics) []  2020-2-1 3:37

Ask a well-educated Iranian for tip on reading the Persian classics and high on his/her list will likely be "The Conference of the Birds," a medieval poetic allegory written by Farid ud-Din Attar. Attar began his professional life as a well-educated pharmacist, and, after some years of listening to the cares and concerns of his patients, devoted himself instead to travel and the study of philosophy. These travels, which extended throughout the Middle East, Turkistan, and India, left him most profoundly impressed by the Sufi approach to Islam and culminated in the writing of "The Conference of the Birds." This lengthy verse poem tells of the find of the world's birds for a magical leader, symbolizing the quest of the human soul for unity with the Supreme ecisely who among the Sufi philosophers and authors of his age most influenced Attar is not well documented, but there is no doubt of the the impact he in turn would have on the work of Rumi and Hafez, the Sufi poets today best known in the West. To further round out your appreciation of the impact that Attar's classic has had over the centuries, treat yourself to the recently published "The Canticle of the Birds: Illustrated Through Persian and Eastern Islamic Art." In this expensive but exquisitely illustrated volume, Dr. Michael Barry of Princeton University has brought to bear his deep knowledge of Persian, Central Asian, and Indian art and thought.

The $100K Journey: The Field Guide to Lessons You Should and Shouldn’t Repeat in Your Business []  2019-12-24 19:26

I loved this book! Tara's writing style is simple and engaging. It was interesting to follow along as she chronicled her journey from having the seed of a business idea to one making over a quarter of a million y of the lessons she learned along the method and insights she had paralleled my own journey. My most latest company just completed its third full year in business. And we surpassed the $100K tag in the second year. As I read this book, I was reminded of some of the things I knew (like how valuable the masterminds I've participated in have been) but wasn't making the best use of at the moment, as well as some of the things I'll need to prepare for as we grow even larger.I was especially encouraged by her advice: "Until you know you have it, I would recommend keeping as much of your attention as you can on figuring out what your company wants to become. They say it takes two to three years for any business to become productive, meaning that it has its direction, a well-defined (or defined enough) audience, and some primary tactics and policies in put to grow."In the past three months, my partner and I have realized we'd nailed it. We know who we are and we have enough tactics and policies in put to grow. In the latest four weeks, we've secured more fresh business than in the 10 months prior, and we're excited about what the next year holds. This book has given me amazing ideas for the "initiations" we need to prepare ourselves for as we grow. I can't say I'm looking forward to that, but I'm excited to see our numbers grow!If you're in the process of growing your own business or wondering what it takes to do so, I highly recommend reading this book.I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is really a terrific read! I speak as a hiring manager who has interviewed hundreds of candidates and reviewed thousands of resumes -- and the tip in this book is pure gold. I love how the author frames things to give job-seekers a huge picture understanding of how to approach their whole job search, not just their resume. And I found myself repeatedly nodding as I read through this book -- the author perfectly captures the perspective of a boss/manager/hiring authority. Buy this book and follow the hints in it! I am recommending this to everyone who asks me for advice!

What's amazing about this book is that it's concise, to the point, timely and exemplifies why your resume should be structured in a certain way. Writing resumes is like fitness - everyone has opinions about how to do it right - up until professional support really opens your eyes. But unlike fitness, turns out writing resumes is not that hard ( or frustrating) till you obtain the right guidance - this book is just that. (The section on "audiences of your resume" is golden!)

I was very disappointed by Marc’s book because it kept setting me up for info that never came. For example, the book included a picture of Leonardo da Vinci’s resume but no sample of the excellent resume Marc was describing. Although there is a link at the end of the book to a sample resume on Ladders, I would have appreciated a section-by-section representation of what your resume should look like as it is built. He has written previously about not including salary figures in job applications and I certainly would not contain my grade on a resume. But online recruiting frequently asks for your salary expectations. This is a lazy method to determine whether a candidate is worth considering and it can knock you out of the running if you come in too high or too though Marc discusses the importance of keywords, he no support as to how you identify which keywords are necessary to a specific employer. Do you search them in the body of the job description, in the list of duties, in the needed skills, or all three? Various job postings use various keywords for related skills, so I create sure to use the ones relevant to that particular posting. Marc favors having one do-it-all resume, but I can’t imagine what that would look like if you contain all possible keywords.I understand the need to quantify your work experience with numbers, but some of us may have jobs that don’t lend themselves to analysis of results. Unless you have a job such as where there are set goals, milestones, rewards or recognition, it is hard to begin using numbers to describe results in previous jobs.I disagree with Marc’s finite list of success verbs. If he forbids the use of “manage,” there are few action substitutes for just getting the job done. Although they aren’t specific to a success, I also use verbs including Administered, Authored, Conceived, Created, Devised, Implemented and ly, if a resume is based on the most latest 15 years of your career, I question the need to date yourself by listing the dates of degrees or other academic credentials that could be far in the past. I received a BA in 1971 when Nixon was in the White House. Who?

It’s not a poor book, and it does read very quickly. I got through it in about an hour. It’s a amazing for what you get, although I was expecting a bit more sophistication. But, I suppose the idea was to simplify it in terms that the average professional can relate to. There were some amazing hints that created me think a bit, but did it support me? Maybe. But it did now wow me. As an executive, I was hoping for stand-out examples rather than just standard “business speak” resumes.

I went back and forth with myself on buying this. I mean what more could i learn about a resume that i havent already heard for free. But I can't lie, it was a solid read. The information about adding my intended titles on there, and not necessarily recounting what I DID but tying it in with what I plan to do in the next role--can't say I've heard that before. The author talks to you straight and literally tells you DO NOT DO THIS or DO THIS. Required that. I mean for $5, I was actually pleasantly surprised. Thanks Ladders.

Boasts about giving you all you need to know for an interview in 90 minutes, but there is so small concrete, useful info you could glean all it has to in about five or 10 minutes. Save your $5. You can learn more from a fast google find on how to succeed in a job interview than you will learn from this guide.

This is an easy, ‘must read’ for anyone who, after a decade at one job, has decided to take a crack at climbing the professional ladder. While the author describes the book as an simple 90-minute read, in to internalize the a lot of golden nuggets therein presented, you should probably go over the book twice and be intentional about highlighting the locations that might possibly serve you well in your quest for a fresh job title (and the accompanying renumeration). You could probably scour the internet for all the info presented in this book, but this reasonably-priced investment will save you a lot of time and frustration. Plus, it’s always better to take ones tip from a seasoned pro! Thank you Marc!5 stars and highly recommended!

My Conference Can Beat Your Conference: Why the SEC Still Rules College Football []  2020-1-29 2:58

I guess the book's title was invented to test to garner more readers. It is seriously mistitled. Only the first chapter really has anything to do with "my conference vs. your conference". The rest of the book is a history of Paul Finebaum, and even more annoying, a history of Alabama, Auburn and the Alabama/Auburn rivalry.I am an SEC fan and am very proud of the SEC's record in college football. However, the BCS championships of any squad other than Alabama and Auburn are mentioned only in passing. BORING!I love the Paul Finebaum Show. It is entertaining. I love the callers, though I do think most of them just reinforce the idea that all Southerners are serious rednecks (what should I expect ... most of the callers are from Alabama). Still ... its entertaining to listen to the destruction of the English language on a everyday basis.I would have loved to learn more about Paul's insane callers. I would have loved a more in depth discussion of why the SEC is so much better than other it was, sitting here in January, 2016, I was mostly entertained by how WRONG so a lot of of Paul's predictions were - South Carolina would remain a powerhouse? Malzahn would be a threat to Nick Saban? On and on and on .... it only goes to prove that college football, especially in the SEC, is anything but ul had a amazing opportunity to really write an interesting book about the SEC. Instead, like most people who live in Alabama, eventually the book just turns into an anthem about Alabama .... with a small redemption for Auburn fans thank to the "kick six" ending. If you are an Alabama fan, the book ... you'll love it. Otherwise, prepare to be disappointed.
