The Bushwhackers review [Movie]  2017-10-13 21:51

Pacifist Pontification. Ah, The Bushwhackers, also known as The Rebel, a Western packed to the rafters with ever watchable actors, but unfurled like an amateur homage to Oaters a decade or so before. Co-written and directed by Rod Amateau, and starring John Ireland, Dorothy Malone, Lawrence Tierney, Lon Chaney Junior, Myrna Dell, Wayne Morris and Jack Elam, movie finds Ireland as Civil Battle veteran Jefferson Waring, who has vowed to never pick up a gun in anger again. However, upon wandering into the city of Independence, Missouri, he finds a city awash with sinister rumblings as Lon Chaney's Don Vito Corleone figure - backed by Dell's nefarious daughter - is plotting to own all the local land because the Railroad is coming and there's going to be a high premium placed on said land. Cue Waring being pulled from emotional pillar to emotional post, with Malone batting her eyelids amidst a powerful portrayal of feisty sexuality, until he takes up the amazing war for the greater amazing in readiness for the finale that holds no surprises. There's a mean spirited edge to the plot which keeps things interesting and spicy, and although they are under used, having Tierney and Elam as thugs for hire is always a amazing thing, but it's directed and edited in such a cack - handed method there's small to no flow to the picture. Making it practically impossible to invest in the characterisations. Unfortunately the DVD print provided by Elstree Hill is a disgrace, not even up to the standard of a VHS copy of a copy! A shame because through the gloom and scrambled fuzz of the transfer, you can see Joseph Biroc's noirish photography trying to break out. The actors create it worth a watch, in that Western fans can tick it off their lists, but nobody should be fooled into thinking there's an exciting picture here, or that it has observational intelligence about a scarred battle veteran, because it has neither and Amateau's subsequent "non" career in movie after this tells you all you need to know. 5/10

Arizona Bushwhackers review [Movie]  2017-10-13 21:50

You better place that blindfold back on. Actually, wearing a blindfold during a sitting for this film seems like a beautiful amazing idea given how lifeless it is. When you see it's produced by A.C. Lyles then realistic expectations are needed, his low budget Westerns grabbed the aged coat tails of a genre that had moved onto a various plain than the one Lyles now traversed. Lyles was astute enough to fill out these Oaters with names familiar to genre fans, regardless of the advent of time or box office appeal, so some interest in the said picture was there from the off. Some of these Westerns rose above their budget limitations to be better than average, the likes of Johnny Reno, Waco and Scene to Thunder Rock, while not essential Western viewings, are amazing time wasters for the undemanding fan. The problem with Arizona Bushwhackers is that it promises so much more than it can ever deliver. Proudly it tells us that it's in Technicolor and Techniscope, and it stars Howard Keel, Yvonne De Carlo, John Ireland, Marilyn Maxwell, Scott Brady, Brian Donlevy, Barton MacLane and James Craig. Hell! The opening narration is even by one James Cagney. And with a plot involving spies and gun runners in the city of Colton, where Union and Confederate operatives dwell, it's all in put for some solid "B" entertainment. Unfortunately it's a lame duck once Caggers has finished his narration. Story limps on as the different citizens of Colton potter around wondering about who is trustworthy? Who will obtain caught out? Who will survive? And isn't it about time the Indians showed up? The actors, bless em', give it a amazing go, shuffling about in some sort of one-take wonderland, while director Lesley Selander tries hard to beef up the plot with the odd action scene; including a war between two one armed men that I'm beautiful sure isn't meant to be funny. It all builds to a hopelessly weak finale where the Indians do indeed turn up and they file in for cannon fodder duties. The colour photography is washed out, the scenic areas barely realised, and the musical score is 101 rank and file. Lifeless all told and only fans of the fading stars should seek this out so as to tick off of their completist lists. 3/10

Bushwhack: A Serial Story of Off-Trail Hiking & Camping in the Wilderness of the Pacific Northwest review []  2020-1-18 19:12

This is clearly an invented tale, and as much as I like a amazing adventure yarn, I couldn't overlook the a lot of holes in this story which presents itself as a real acc of a backcountry backpack gone terribly ide from misusing words such as "conscience" for "conscious", the author deserves an award for painfully poor writing. For example:"There was small blood as Peter's clothing contained most of his body fluids like a Vietnam-era body bag.""Slush coated everything like a spilled slurpee in the back seat of a shiny fresh car."Worse yet, the story is supposedly told by two various people, both of whom have identical writing styles and both of whom use uncommon terms such as "katabatic" when describing the flow of air down a e female writer also uses deplorable metaphors, such as:"It was remarkably simple to leave him as my Florence Nightingale syndrome evaporated like so much spilled Jack Daniels."Kinda thought that was more of a man's drink, but whatever. It's still poor e storyline goes from poor to worse to preposterous as the remaining survivors, the author and the cutest most capable female in the group (of course), somehow search wonder and romance despite being cold, wet, exhausted, devoured by insects and having seen several of their companions die while others were just abandoned in the wilderness without proper water, meal or shelter. But for .99 you may still search yourself entertained, but be forewarned that you won't search all the loose ends neatly tied up in the end. Was a rescue effort mounted? Did anyone else create it out alive? Were bodies recovered? The author just leaves his readers hanging.

I was looking for backpacking similar literature for my kindle, came across this, and downloaded it mainly because it is so cheap. When you begin reading it becomes obvious fairly quickly that this has not been written by a professional writer. The style is by no means poor but it's no Faulkner or Vonnegut. Sometimes the story seems slightly implausible too. I can't imagine in any group of people the social situation to deteriorate as quickly as it happens in this story. If you've ever watched a season of Huge Brother you've seen that everyone's nice the first few days before it all starts going down the drain. I would imagine it to be related in a situation like the one the characters in this story search themselves at said, the slightly amateurish style actually makes this a very simple read and, to my surprise, I finished the whole piece in beautiful much one go. Don't expect amazing literature, or even a amazing story, but in some method this is entertaining and if you've got a few hours to slay and like outdoors similar stories it is worth the low price.

It is a sloppy fictional tale. Could it have happen ?? Oh, yeah, it could have, but Gerald's timelines don't add up and too a lot of vital info are missing. Explain to me how 8 people go missing off the face of the earth and authorities aren't notified by family ???People do stupid things in the wilderness all the time, but eventuality people come across their bodies. Isn't Gerald legally obligated to report the demise of his hiking buddies ?? Chris S.

The writing is not good at best, though the storyline does hold one turning the page. No hero development other than deducing the narrator to be arrogant.

I only read to chapters two or three. I wasn't able to obtain into this story. I found the writing style was mostly the reason. I'll read anything that's well-written. Or very informative and interesting. This wasn't. Not for me.

The author would have you believe this to be a real story, but there are some hard to believes scenarios. However, true, or not, it was a beautiful interesting read. My only true complaint was the ending. Method to a lot of questions left unanswered.

This is a amazing read for those who venture outdoors. It goes through what can happen, how it happens and the outcome when things go from amazing to worse. Follow his path and you can easily spot the mistakes they created and then you can imagine what you would do, how to rectify the situation.
